The beginning of a lasting design legacy
Designed in 1955, the No. 1 Sofa marked the beginning of Børge Mogensen’s collaboration with Fredericia as house designer. Created with a vision of combining contemporary expression with refined upholstery craftsmanship, the sofa introduced many of the principles that would define Mogensen’s later work.
Its carefully composed proportions bring together a solid wooden frame and softly sculptural cushions. The loose, buttoned cushions add both comfort and character, while balancing the precise construction of the upholstered frame. This contrast between structure and softness became a recurring signature throughout Mogensen’s designs.
At the time of its introduction, the No. 1 Sofa represented a new direction in Danish furniture design. Its modern silhouette and thoughtful details offered a fresh interpretation of the traditional sofa, reflecting Mogensen’s ability to create pieces that were both forward-looking and deeply rooted in craftsmanship.
The No. 1 Sofa feels familiar yet distinctive. Still defined by honest materials, enduring proportions, and a strong sense of functionality, it embodies Mogensen’s lasting belief that good design should serve everyday life while remaining relevant across generations.
